Rules of Engagement (ROE) are directives issued by competent military authority which specify the circumstances and limitations under which forces will initiate and/or continue combat engagement with other forces encountered [AAP-6]. ROE generally limit the otherwise lawful use of force. The Maritime ROE Application keeps a list of ROEs for a Maritime Operation and update the list as relevant messages arrive.
