Title
Portable Network Graphics (PNG) Specification, v. 1.0

Applicability

PNG is an extensible file format for the lossless, portable, well-compressed storage of raster images. PNG provides a patent-free replacement for GIF and can also replace many common uses of TIFF. Indexed-colour, grey-scale, and true-colour images are supported, plus an optional alpha channel. Sample depths range from 1 to 16 bits. The PNG format provides a portable, legally unencumbered, well-compressed, well-specified standard for lossless bitmapped image files. Although the initial motivation for developing PNG was to replace GIF, the design provides some useful new features not available in GIF, with minimal cost to developers
