Applicability

UDP provides for a connection-less, end-to-end transport service. UDP allows users to send data messages without connection establishment and without any guarantee of delivery or sequencing. In effect, UDP is simply a user interface to IP. UDP should only be considered where ISO connection-less transport services are not consistent with the system requirements. UDP/IP can support OSI upper layer applications by employing RFC 1240 1991.
